Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office Fellow Opportunity
The Office of Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization (U.S. Department of Energy – EERE) is now accepting applications for a new fellow keen to make an impact in climate policy and clean energy.
What will I be doing?
IEDO is seeking talented and passionate ORISE Fellows that can support technical, programmatic, strategic, and policy efforts that will meet clean energy goals and drive innovation in U.S. manufacturing. New Fellows will collaborate closely with IEDO staff – including several former Fellows – and will develop a broad understanding of the potential of new technologies as well as the barriers to technology deployment. With guidance from a mentor, you will learn how to:
- Utilize scientific expertise to support decision-makers in the areas of energy efficiency policy, planning, research, development, and communication
- Analyze technical needs and opportunities and the potential impacts of program and policy decisions
- Provide input for analysis on industrial decarbonization, circular economy, and workforce development
- Assess the potential for next generation materials and processes
- Evaluate approaches to achieve practical minimum energy requirements and minimum lifecycle energy to manufacture and deploy next generation technologies
- Identify and evaluate new materials efficiency, waste reduction, and recycling technologies
- Act as a technical resource for IEDO early stage applied research and development projects
These activities will be carried out in collaboration with a team of federal employees at all levels, other Fellows, support service contractors, and National Lab experts.
Why should I apply?
IEDO’s Research and Development (R&D) projects explore novel energy-efficient, next-generation materials and innovative process technologies for both targeted specific industry sectors and a wider range of manufacturing industries. In addition, R&D projects focus on foundational or advanced energy technologies across multiple industry sectors. All of IEDO’s R&D investments are high impact, use project diversity to spread risk, target nationally important innovations at critical decision points, and contribute to quantifiable energy savings. You will become part of a group of highly trained researchers, scientists, and engineers with the education, background, and experience to be part of the workforce that supports the DOE’s mission in the future. You will enhance your education and training in many areas including, but not limited to: industrial decarbonization, renewable energy, energy policy, geothermal energy, bioenergy technologies, sustainable materials, workforce development research, supporting the growth of a modern, equitable manufacturing industry, project management and development, and stakeholder engagement. You will have the opportunity to increase your marketability in multiple disciplines, collaborate with top scientists and engineers, and gain insight into career paths through your experiences and under the leadership of your mentor.
Where will I be located?
Washington, D.C.
The details:
You will receive a competitive stipend, a supplement to offset the costs of health insurance, a research materials and travel allowance (up to $10,000), and relocation reimbursement (up to $5,000).
You must be a U.S. Citizen and completed or be in the process of completing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in the last 60 months.
